About This Category

Two calculations cover most of what a private investor needs. The average price tells you your break-even after buying the same stock several times at different prices; return on investment tells you whether the position, plus any dividend, actually made money.

Both are arithmetic, not prediction. Averaging down lowers the break-even price but also raises the amount at risk, and a positive ROI can hide a loss in real terms if inflation or fees are larger than the return.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the average price a weighted average?

Yes. Each purchase contributes in proportion to the amount spent, so buying twice as much at a lower price moves the average twice as far.

Should dividends count in ROI?

They should. Total return includes dividends; price return does not. A 4 % dividend on a flat share price is still a 4 % return before tax.

Does ROI account for fees and tax?

Only if you include them in the cost or subtract them from the gain. A 1 % trading fee on each side of a round trip removes roughly 2 % of the invested amount.
