Read MoreAbout This Category
Volume of a solid is area × height, so the whole category is really seven area formulas with a multiplication on top. Cubes and cuboids are direct; prisms need the area of their base; the tetrahedron is the odd one out, because all four faces meet at a point instead of two matching bases.
Every page takes the base or edge length in the same unit and returns a cubic unit. Changing the unit of one input changes the unit of the answer, so the calculator labels the output rather than assuming.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the tetrahedron formula divided by 3?
Because three tetrahedra fit inside a triangular prism of the same base and height. The factor applies to every pyramid, whatever the base shape.
How do I handle a prism whose base is irregular?
Compute the base area by splitting it into triangles or rectangles, then multiply by the height. The prism pages list the base area factor for each regular polygon.
Can I mix centimetres and metres?
Convert first. Mixing units is the most common way to get an answer that is wrong by a factor of 1,000 without noticing.
