Field Goal Percentage Calculator

Field goal percentage (FG%) is the ratio of successful field goals (2-point and 3-point shots) to attempts in basketball, used to evaluate scoring efficiency.

Enter the number of field goals made and attempted to instantly calculate the field goal percentage (%). Useful for comparing a player's shooting efficiency or analyzing game records.

For example, 8 successes in 15 attempts gives a field goal percentage of about 53.3%.

About This Calculator

Field goal percentage (FG%) measures shooting efficiency: the share of shot attempts that score, counting both two- and three-point attempts without weighting them. It is one of the oldest shooting stats in basketball.

Enter the field goals made and attempted to calculate the percentage.

NBA teams shoot about 47% from the field, but raw FG% counts a three-pointer the same as a two. That is why a 35% three-point shooter beats a 47% two-point shooter on efficiency: 0.35 × 3 = 1.05 points per attempt against 0.47 × 2 = 0.94.

Key Formula:FG% = Field goals made / Field goals attempted × 100

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good field goal percentage?

NBA league average is around 46–47%. Above 50% is very good for a regular shooter; centres often exceed 55% because most of their attempts come close to the basket.

Why is effective field goal percentage sometimes preferred?

Because a three-point shot is worth 50% more than a two, raw FG% undervalues three-point shooters. Effective field goal percentage (eFG%) adjusts for this, which is why analysts use it alongside FG%.

Why do teams that shoot many threes have lower FG%?

Because the distance is longer and the release angle flatter. Threes convert at roughly 35 to 37% in the NBA while twos convert at 50 to 55%, yet the extra point per make more than compensates, which is why the shot profile shifted toward three-pointers.

What is true shooting percentage?

TS% scores every shooting possession including free throws: points / (2 × (field goal attempts + 0.44 × free throw attempts)). Around 55% is league average and 60% is excellent, which makes it a fairer efficiency measure than FG%.
