About This Category

These tools translate between units that design and engineering teams routinely mix up: pixels and points, decimal and binary byte prefixes, megabits per second and megabytes per second. The arithmetic looks simple, but each conversion hides a convention that decides the result.

Every page names its convention. Storage counts 1 kB as 1,000 bytes while operating systems historically used 1,024, which is why a 1 TB drive reports 931 GB. CSS resolution is fixed at 96 pixels per inch regardless of the physical panel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does a 4K monitor need interface scaling?

Because 3840 × 2160 across 27 inches is about 163 pixels per inch, far above the 96 dpi the browser assumes. Without scaling, 16 px text renders physically smaller than on an older screen and becomes hard to read.

Is download time calculated in bits or bytes?

Bandwidth is quoted in bits per second and file sizes in bytes, so the factor is 8. A 100 Mbit/s link moves at most 12.5 MB/s, which is 1 GB in about 80 seconds before protocol overhead.

Do these numbers depend on the device?

Only the ones involving physical size, such as DPI and print resolution. Aspect ratio, byte conversion and colour codes are pure arithmetic and identical everywhere.
