Uniform Motion Calculator

Let's calculate speed using time and distance in uniform linear motion.

Uniform motion is movement in a straight line at a constant speed. The object repeats equal displacements in equal time intervals. Speed and direction do not change, so there is no acceleration. It can be observed in a car cruising at high speed or a person running at a constant pace on flat ground.

Uniform Motion

Uniform Motion Calculation Method

Uniform Motion is you can derive the speed (v) from the distance (d) between two points and the travel time (t).

d = vt

The formula to find the speed in uniform motion is as follows.

v = d / t

The formula to find the elapsed time in uniform motion is as follows.

t = d / v
The hourly speed (v) is 0/h .
The speed per minute (v) is 0/m .
The speed per second (v) is 0/s .
The distance (d) is 0 .
The time (t) is 0Time 0Minute 0Second .

About This Calculator

Uniform motion means travelling at a constant speed in a straight line — the simplest case of kinematics. Speed, distance and time are linked by one relationship, so knowing any two gives the third.

Enter the distance and time to get the average speed, or provide speed and time to find the distance travelled.

Uniform motion means constant velocity, so distance is speed times time: 72 km/h for 45 minutes covers 54 km. Since 72 km/h is exactly 20 m/s, that is 20 × 2,700 = 54,000 m. Average speed is total distance over total time, and it can differ sharply from the speeds used along the way.

Key Formula:v = d / t · d = v × t · t = d / v

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between speed and velocity?

Speed is a scalar — how fast you are moving. Velocity is a vector — how fast and in which direction. A car circling a roundabout at a constant 30 mph has constant speed but changing velocity.

How do I convert km/h to m/s?

Divide by 3.6: 72 km/h ÷ 3.6 = 20 m/s. To go the other way, multiply by 3.6. Using SI units (m/s) avoids mistakes in physics calculations.

How do I average two speeds over equal distances?

Not by adding and halving. At 60 km/h out and 40 km/h back the average is 2 × 60 × 40 / (60 + 40) = 48 km/h, because the slower leg takes longer and therefore carries more weight.

What does a distance-time graph of uniform motion look like?

A straight line whose slope is the speed. A steeper line means faster motion, a horizontal line means standing still, and a curve means the speed is changing.
