About This Category

Two shooting percentages, two very different denominators. Field-goal percentage counts made shots over attempts and treats a three-pointer as one attempt; free-throw percentage measures an uncontested shot from a fixed distance.

Neither measures scoring. A player shooting 45 % from three outscores one shooting 50 % from two on the same number of attempts, which is why effective field-goal percentage exists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does field-goal percentage count three-pointers differently?

No, it counts each made shot as one, regardless of value. That is why a 40 % three-point shooter is more efficient than a 45 % two-point shooter.

What is a good free-throw percentage?

Around 75 % is average for professional players, 85 % is very good, and below 60 % invites intentional fouling.

How many attempts are needed before the rate stabilises?

Roughly 300 field-goal attempts and 150 free throws. Before that, a hot or cold streak can dominate the number.
