Data Size Converter Calculator

The data size converter converts between bytes (B), kilobytes (KB), megabytes (MB), gigabytes (GB), and terabytes (TB) using base 1024.

Quickly convert units when checking file sizes or calculating storage space and network transfer. Choose a number and unit to see it converted to all other units at once.

For example, 1 GB equals 1,024 MB, which is 1,048,576 KB or 1,073,741,824 B.

Data Size Converter Calculation Method

1KB = 1024B, 1MB = 1024KB, 1GB = 1024MB, 1TB = 1024GB

B: 0
KB: 0
MB: 0
GB: 0
TB: 0

About This Calculator

This converter switches between bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes and terabytes. It matters because storage vendors use decimal (1,000-based) units while operating systems often use binary (1,024-based) ones, which is why an advertised 1 TB drive shows less.

Enter a value and select its unit to convert to all the others using base 1024.

Storage units are decimal and binary at the same time, which is why a 1 TB drive shows about 931 GB in Windows. Manufacturers count powers of 1000 while operating systems historically counted powers of 1024, now properly called kibibytes. The gap compounds with size: about 2.4 % at kilobyte level and nearly 10 % at terabyte level.

Key Formula:1 KiB = 1,024 B · 1 MiB = 1,024 KiB · 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my 1 TB drive show only 931 GB?

Manufacturers define 1 TB as 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, but the operating system reports binary units. Dividing by 1,024 three times gives about 931 "GB", so the missing space is a units difference, not lost storage.

What is the difference between MB and MiB?

MB is a decimal megabyte of 1,000,000 bytes; MiB is a binary mebibyte of 1,048,576 bytes (1024²). The IEC introduced the -i- names in 1998 to remove the ambiguity, though both are still widely used.

Why does my 512 GB phone show less usable space?

Two effects add up. Decimal versus binary accounting explains roughly 7 % at that size, and the operating system plus preinstalled apps consume more. A 512 GB phone typically reports around 470 GB of visible storage.

Is a megabit the same as a megabyte?

No, one byte is eight bits. A 100 Mbit/s connection downloads at about 12.5 MB/s, so a 1 GB file needs around 80 seconds at full speed before protocol overhead.
