How many days, hours, minutes, and seconds is the Sun's orbital period?

The Sun's orbital period is about 365 days, 6 hours, 14 minutes, and 46 seconds. That is about 365.25 days, about 8,766 hours, or about 31,556,926 seconds.

The 24 solar terms do not divide the year into 24 equal time periods; they divide the Earth's position relative to the Sun into 24 parts (15° each). Each term therefore lasts a different amount of time, and the start of spring (Ipchun) each year is the point where the Sun's angle reaches 27.5° (315°).

About This Calculator

This time unit converter switches between seconds, minutes, hours, days, months and years. Individually these conversions are simple, but chains of them — like reading a log file of 3,600 seconds — are where a converter saves time.

Enter a value and pick its unit to convert it into every other time unit at once.

Time units are not a decimal chain: a day is 24 hours, an hour 60 minutes, a minute 60 seconds, a week 7 days and a year 365 or 366. Converting 100,000 seconds gives 27 hours 46 minutes 40 seconds — more than a day, which is why conversions have to cascade from the largest unit downward.

Key Formula:1 min = 60 s · 1 h = 60 min · 1 day = 24 h · 1 year ≈ 365.25 days

Frequently Asked Questions

How many seconds are in a day?

A day has 86,400 seconds: 24 × 60 × 60. A week has 604,800 seconds and a non-leap year 31,536,000 seconds.

Should a month be 30 or 31 days?

For conversions, a month is usually averaged at about 30.44 days (365.25 ÷ 12). Using exactly 30 days is fine for rough estimates but causes drift over long periods.

How many seconds are there in a month?

It depends on the month: 28 days is 2,419,200 seconds, 30 days is 2,592,000 and 31 days is 2,678,400. Averaged over a non-leap year it works out at about 2,629,746 seconds.

Why is a year not exactly 365 days?

A tropical year is about 365.2422 days. Leap years add a day every four years, and the century rule skips three of every four century leap years so the calendar stays aligned with the seasons.
