About This Category

The mathematics calculators cover the three things people actually need: arithmetic that has to be exact (fractions, GCD and LCM, percentages), formulas that have to be right (areas, volumes, equations) and summaries that have to be honest (mean, median, standard deviation).

Every page states the formula it applies, so the number can be reproduced with a pencil. Where a problem allows several valid approaches — comparing fractions by common denominator or by decimal, solving a cubic by factorising or by Cardano — the calculator says which one it used.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are fractions shown together with decimals?

Because each form answers a different question. The decimal is easier to compare and to carry into further arithmetic, while the fraction keeps the exact value: 1/3 is 0.333… forever, so rounding it early changes the answer.

How do I find the area of an irregular shape?

Split it into triangles, rectangles and trapezoids, compute each part and add the results. Every polygon can be triangulated this way, which is why the triangle and trapezoid pages are the building blocks for the rest.

Is the standard deviation a population or sample figure?

The pages label it explicitly. Population divides by n; sample divides by n − 1 to correct for estimating the mean from the same data. With fewer than about 30 observations the difference is clearly visible.
