Cuboid Calculator

Cuboid: how to find the surface area and volume when one side length is given, and how to find the surface area and side length when the volume is given.

Cuboid

Cuboid Calculation Method

Calculate the volume and surface area of a rectangular prism (cuboid).

Formula for the volume

Formula for the area

The volume (V) of the cuboid is 0 .
The area (S) of the cuboid is 0 .

About This Calculator

A cuboid (rectangular box) has six rectangular faces and a volume equal to width times depth times height. Shipping boxes, rooms and bricks are all cuboids.

Enter the width, depth and height to calculate the volume and the total surface area.

The formula is simple, so mistakes usually come from units. Measuring in centimetres returns cubic centimetres, and 1,000 cm³ make one litre. A 60 × 40 × 40 cm shipping box therefore holds 96 litres, while a room of 4 × 2.5 × 3 m holds 30 m³ — 30,000 litres.

Key Formula:V = w × d × h · Surface area = 2(wd + wh + dh)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a cube and a cuboid?

Every cube is a cuboid, but a cuboid only needs three right angles at each corner — its three dimensions can all differ. A cube is the special case where width, depth and height are equal.

How do I work out the volume of a room in litres?

Calculate the volume in cubic metres, then multiply by 1,000, since 1 m³ holds 1,000 litres. A 4 × 3 × 2.5 m room is 30 m³, or 30,000 litres of air.

How many litres does a 60 × 40 × 40 cm box hold?

60 × 40 × 40 = 96,000 cm³, and dividing by 1,000 gives 96 litres. Allow roughly 10% for wall thickness and flaps, which leaves about 85 litres of usable space for packing.

How do I convert cubic metres to litres?

Multiply by 1,000, because one cubic metre equals exactly 1,000 litres — a cube of 10 cm sides is one litre. Going the other way, divide litres by 1,000 to get cubic metres, and watch that all three dimensions use the same unit.
